This May, the RHS Malvern Spring Festival, held at the picturesque Three Counties Showground near Malvern, Worcestershire, once again awed garden lovers with its extraordinary designs, creative installations, and horticultural storytelling
RHS Malvern Spring Festival
The RHS judged Show Gardens, located at the heart of RHS Malvern Spring Festival are one of the most popular features with visitors. They showcase everything from award-winning planting ideas to the latest design trends.
This year, Ivyline proudly supported Kate Mason to help create her show garden "The Hierarchy of Plants" at this year's show.

The Hierarchy of Plants
Rooted in Maslow’s famed Hierarchy of Needs, Mason’s RHS garden unfolds as a tiered, tropical-style masterpiece that layers both philosophy and planting in one immersive experience.
Set across distinct levels, the garden educates visitors on plant hardiness - ground-level foliage is hardy enough to survive the British winter outdoors, while the more tender specimens in raised beds require frost-free conditions.
The planting scheme marries cottage garden favourites with exotic textures and vibrant colours - lush foliage and structural palms come together seamlessly.
Fun fact!
Engaging in both form and function, the design hides a playful treasure hunt with ten tiny watering cans tucked among the foliage - inviting younger visitors to explore and connect with the garden!

Beyond its educational approach, “The Hierarchy of Plants” shines through its thoughtful sustainability features.
It incorporates upcycled sculptures, rainwater collection troughs, and sustainably sourced materials.
How cool is the misting atomiser that evokes a jungle atmosphere!

The garden’s heartfelt backstory enriches its impact. Kate Mason, who channeled her own experience with postnatal depression into her career in garden design, created this serene escape as her debut show garden. Her journey from personal healing to public display resonates deeply through every layer of the design.
At the RHS festival, "The Hierarchy of Plants" earned the Silver-Gilt medal, a testament to its creative excellence, and also captured the People’s Choice Best Show Garden award, beloved by visitors for its tropical drama, purple-hued planting, and whimsical details like fairy houses crafted by Kate’s son.
“Ever since I started studying horticulture, I have been obsessed with [RHS] Show gardens. I love the fully finished product, because as a designer, I tend to design and install the garden but I don’t often get to see the result.”

The RHS Malvern Spring Festival is a joyful celebration of plants, people, and purpose. With its mix of creativity, community spirit, and forward-thinking gardening, the event left visitors inspired to get out in the garden and start their gardening journeys.
